Economics of Pennies

Should the USA stop using/producing pennies?

Pennies: Enough Already!

Imagine my surprise at the recent announcement that the U.S. will be issuing four new versions of the penny, the first of which comes out in February, in honor of Lincoln’s bicentennial.

What a waste of resources — and what a move inside the production-possibility frontier! Each penny costs much more than 1 cent to manufacture.

Coupons, online check out codes, deals

Get a Great Deal on Anything

They're at retailme not.com, and it takes almost no time or effort to search-alphabetically or by category or store (there are over 15,000 stores listed). The site offers codes for home products, sporting goods, luggage, food, and even Halloween costumes.

Dealcatcher.com is a good resource for coupons, rebates, and Sunday newspaper circulars listing weekly deals. The printable coupons don't require special software (some sites do). A recent check found a coupon for $10 off a $60 purchase at the athletic shoe store finishline.com and a printable coupon for 25 percent off a pair of jeans at Gap. You can also compare prices here. We searched for the 1.7-ounce bottle of Vera Wang's Princess fragrance and found the lowest price ($43.95) through DealCatcher, versus $55 at sephora.com and nordstrom.com. The Canon PowerShot SD790 IS ten-megapixel digital camera was $299.99 at bestbuy.com. But DealCatcher found it at dell.com for $243 (including free shipping).

American Drinking water

Ok. Let me understand this...I should not drink professionally bottled water because the plastic bottle is toxic...and now I should not drink the tap water because I could be ingesting pharmaceutical waste? hmmmm...feels like a "pick your poison" situation.

Update: 41 46 Million Americans Drink Pharmaceutical Waste

investigation has revealed that another five million people, including residents of Reno, Colorado Springs, and Chicago, now sip the potentially dangerous pharmaceutical soup.

Chicago, for example, found a cholesterol medication and a nicotine derivative. Many cities found the anti-convulsant carbamazepine. Officials in one of those communities, Colorado Springs, say they detected five pharmaceuticals in all, including a tranquilizer and a hormone.

    Social Media value

Do we over think social tools because they are new?

Is it possible to just enjoy connecting with other people for the sake of connecting to other people.

    The Truth is 140 Characters

    So what is the truth?

This is why I believe Social Media is taking off at rates unseen by any other form of media: it’s the people you know, fictionalized.

These are people, stories, who are only as interesting as what they represent that you find interesting about yourself. A more vibrant reverberation of the boring everyday everyone.

I cringe as I write this because I hold my social networks dearly, and feel as though I participate in them honestly. As much as I enjoy social networking, I also understand that it is not reality. It is only I choose to like best about reality. And people will be creating for social media just like people today write and direct and design sets for movies.

The truth is 140 characters. Everything else is our own private Idaho.

MBA program has a class in SL

    clipped from www.slnn.com
Wright State University prof awarded for Second Life MBA program
WRIGHT STATE -  Wright State University in Dayton, Ohio has nominated Shu Schiller for the Innovative Excellence in Teaching, Learning and Technology award.  This national award is presented by the Center for the Advancement of Teaching and Learning and goes annually to faculty members demonstrating innovative approaches to student learning.
Schiller’s class is anything but ordinary.  At each step of the way, students analyze experiences from a business and marketing perspective.  At one point they might be looking at a case study.  (For example, STA Travel had two islands and hoped to promote their real life travel business within SL.  They targeted newbies by offering them tours around SL.  Within a year, they had withdrawn from SL.  Why did they leave?  What can we learn from their experience?)
You need to think about the business and how to use your first life resources to promote your SL business,” Schiller said.
